Any body know how to make development file (.med) from runtime file (.mer) in RS View Studio? I have just upload Panelview Plus1000 from field to modify the application. But do not know how to open .mer file in my RSView Studio.
Please help me... Many thanks.

Ahh RS View Studio The most illogical, unorthodox and pathetic way to configure HMI known by man to this day.

Sorry, but you cant convert the runtime (.mer)back to development (.med) i have asked this question to Rockwell support, and that was their answer. You must find the original .med backup file, or the unbacked project folder, and re import the project.

When you do, the fun just begins :)

Thank Dennis,

If I know like that I rather use PV 1000 with PanelBuilder32 rather than PV1000+ with RSView Studio. Unfortunetly I do not have original .med backup file. Uhhh :-(

For my two cents, we have taken the position that we will always start
by recommending a PC with a custom written VB application. Just a few
years ago I argued *AGAINST* the same thing on this very forum
(http://www.control.com/1026200309/index_html,
http://www.control.com/1026187217/index_html), but the tool sets have
changed dramatically and the tools that are available today make it
easier and cheaper to use a computer and VB than almost anything else.

Of course, if the customer has a plant full of panel views (or any xyz
brand HMI somethings) and already has the support structures in place
for them, it's better to go with the flow. But if you can get out of
vendor lock in, it's worth considering.

Hi Michael

Of course, that gets you into MS lock-in and
obsolescence issues. :^) But, I suppose those
are a given, just homage to the monopoly.

This is true, but look at it this way.

With the canned HMI packages, I get my "source" and use their "interpreter" engine inside the MS environment. With a Visual Studio app I get out directly to the OS level, and I still have my source. I might still be inside the fence, but at least I'm out in the pasture instead of locked in the barn.

While it's true that MS has MS's best interest at heart, and not mine nor my customer's, the same mindset is true for the HMI vendor's, too. Anyone tried to get support for an abandon version of any HMI package lately? Get out your checkbook.

Is this a utility? I also have this problem. I can't locate the original APA all I have is the mer and I need to convert it. Can you help me out?

To the best of my knowledge, you cannot use a terminal (MER) file for anything other than downloading to a PV+. Unlike the old style panelviews, where the terminal file could be uploaded and converted back to be edited, you cannot do this with the PV+ line.

Or so AB tech support states.

I once asked them what could possibly possess them to do this, and they said it was because of requests from OEMs who wanted to prevent people from reusing their screens. His suggestion was to download the archive file into the PV compact flash card as a work-a-round, so that at least it would be there in case of future need.

One way to recover a project from an .MER, as told by an RA guy, is to run the file in RSViewME and while open search for the MED file it creates. This will give some recoverability to start creating the project. I have been told in version 5 you are able to recover the project without having the source.

If you beat up on Rockwell enough they can convert it for you. We had the same thing happen to us a couple of months ago. We sent the runtime file to them and they were able to convert it. It all depends on who you get from their stellar pool of tech support people.

A) Any mer file can be recovered into an med file. You must have the right tools (available to anyone).

B) An mer created prior to v5 RSView Studio may only partically be recovered (certain items can't be extracted from the older mer's v3 - v4).

C) As of v5 of RSView Studio mers are completely recoverable using a wizard built into RSView Studio (wizard only works on v5 and later mers)

D) No, I will not tell you how to do it.

E) No, I will not do it for you for free.
