NAMUR and Instrinsic Safety

Friends,

Could you help to clarify what the use of NAMUR is and does it have any connection with IS? Since I noticed some instruments like proximity switch with NAMUR are used in hazardous area.

NAMUR is inherently intrinsically safe, when used with a signal NAMUR conditioner.

NAMUR is a trade association of process controls users that has worked to define certain aspects of process control equipment. They have put out "recommended practices" that equipment should adhere to. The NAMUR documents are not standards but bid spec.

Their origins are chemical/pharmaceutical industries with most companies from Europe.
