Interfacing a Weighing scale to a PLC

Hi,
I have a weighing scale and wish to interface it with a PLC or any other controller with RS232 from the weighing scale.The effort is to read the weighing scale's output and display it. And as per the set point get a output for weight below setpoint and above setpoint. Thus being able to fill the material on the weighing scale till it reaches set point automatically.

I have tried various sites and tried to go through many PLC manuals/brochures. None that I have come across give even basic details of getting data from RS232.

I also wonder why the PLC's and other automation products cost so high. I personally beleive that if effort is made to use a PC to do the job of a PLC via a USB port the market for such product is tremendous as small industries would also try their hand at automation. All uses of automation are not time critical. But Cost is.

I hope some Company breaks this price barrier and can offer competitive products at low prices. As the mobile has changes the world maybe the very low cost automation products can be a product used in each and every house/industry.

Hi,

I work for a company called HMS and they make, among other things, gateways. I believe that we have a product that might be of interest, a gateway for serial to fieldbus. In this case I would recommend the Ethernet to serial, where one can use Ethernet/IP or ModbusTCP on the fieldbus side.

Any PLC can work. If you worry about cost, then use Automation.com. My company uses PLC-5/20 processor of AB.

We use RS-232 cable to connect to decoder. And decoder connects with PLC with analog signal, and we use "SCL" instruction for signal conversion. It's quite easy and IDIOT proof.
