Recently I came across a word called 2 wire and 4 wire transmitters. what does that mean?

2 wire usually means the power to run the transmitter is on the same cable on the signal.

4 wire devices usually have 2 wires for power, 2 wires for signal.

In a 2 wire 4-20ma transmitter the 0-4ma is what is powering the device.

Well, 4-wire transmitters have 4 wires, two for power and two for the signal. 2-wire transmitters draw their power from the signal itself and are also called "loop powered". In their case, the loop is wet (powered) by either the receiving instrument or a power supply in the loop with the transmitter and receiver.
