120VAC MOTOR

I would like to find out the proper way to wire a 120vac TEFC single phase motor. My question is, does it matter where the hot and neutral are wired to as long as its on a line? on just about every motor I have looked at, it calls for LINE 1 and LINE 2 and to change the rotation of the motor you would switch a internal jumper, so that tells me it does not matter, so does it? Also could someone tell me what a "split phase" motor is and does the wiring matter on that type? Thank you very much in advance for the help.

Split phase, iirc, means that a capacitor is used in the line to induce a phase differential between line and neutral, causing the motor to turn. I only have limited experience with them, but I believe that the way you wire it does in fact affect direction of rotation.

I connect the neutral to line1; but nothing will change if you connect the neutral to line2.
To change the rotation you invert the starter leads (5-8). Try this link http://www.tpub.com/utilities/index.htm
