Whether the IEC-60870-5-101 protocol is the same as DNP-3, if not what is the difference? Is anybody can help me on this? If somebody asking for IEC-60870-5-101 protocol what will be the advantages they are looking for?

both the protocols are different but used for similar applications. DNP3 is popular in US and IEC 101 is popular in Europe. You might want to check up http://www.dnp.org for more information and comparisons between the two.

101 has 3 layers. They are physical layer, link layer and application layer. DNP3 has 4 layers. Besides the same 3 layers as 101, there is a transport layer.

101 is designed for telecontrol. There are many application functions you can use in telecontrol tasks. Its efficiency and reliabilty are good enough to accomplish your demand.

IEC101 is an international standard protocol for power system monitoring, control for electric power systems. This uses standard asynchronous serial tele-control channel interface between DTE and DCE. The standard is suitable for multiple configurations like point-to-point, star, mutidropped etc.

DNP3 is a set of communications protocols used between components in process automation systems. Its main use is in utilities such as electric and water companies. Specifically, it was developed to facilitate communications between various types of data acquisition and control equipment. It plays a crucial role in SCADA systems, where it is used by SCADA Master Stations RTUs, and IEDs. It is primarily used for communications between a master station and RTUs or IEDs.

in addition to mentioned 'differences', the basic difference is in dnp the large data/information will be sent to master in single shot/slot. where as in iec 101 the data will be sent in small packets very frequently. and another difference is dnp requires less bandwidth as compared to IEC 101 for the same information. other difference is DNP supports both Serial and TCP/IP communication, where as IEC 101 ONLY Serial. Now to over come this limitation we have IEC 104 which is IEC 101+ TCP/IP stack.
