From http://www.modbus.pl you can download the vb project using mscomm to get data from modbus slaves.

I wrote a series of 3 articles that (will) appear in circuit cellar. In December 2006 there was an article on using the serial port with VB2005

Because if you don't know about simple communication then you should learn basics of MSComm Control.

For your information every hardware has different protocols.
