I would like to connect four remote sites to a single monitoring site. I've heard this can be done using Cellular Modems, but I can't find much information on this.
Has any one used this?
If so, what does the Network layout look like? Is there a cellular receiver on the SCADA end?
Any links to white papers and such would be really helpful.
Thanks in advance.

R,
We have done this many times. Generally cellular modems are available from your cellular supplier. The pricing structure varies but usually consists of a base price plus a usage charge. Each modem must have a fixed I/P address. The host driver then accesses the remotes using these addresses.

I would recommend you consider AirLink (who is now part of Sierra Wireless). They have a number of models, availalble for various networks.

You will need one cellular modem for each remote site. Some carriers will allow access from the internet, eliminating the need for a cellular modem at the SCADA host. Though, this means that you need to be diligent about security issues. It is possible to setup an APN (or private network), but this generally takes a lot of work with the
carrier.
