Bulid SCADA S/S
Communications systems and equipment. topic
Posted by smith on 11 February, 2008 - 9:52 pm
Dear Sir,

In our site I have temp monitor devices (OMEGA TYPE) with availability RS-232 communication port. From this feature of the device we can connect up to ten units in parallel to a PC. I want to connect these devices to RS-232 to RS-485 converter and then to IFIX SCADA on a PC to monitor the temp by make historical trends.

Could you tell me if this idea applicable or not and what means connected in parallel?

N.B. I have 8 devices, each one has 8 analog channels.

Your reply highly appreciated.

Best regards.

You will need to connect 8 devices to a RS 232-485 convertor.

According to me in parallel means that the cable will be looped from 1 device to another in a daisy chain fashion. From the last device the cable will go to RS 232-485 convertor. At the other end you will need a RS 232-485 converter again to interface with the PC.
You will need to write some kind of driver or OPC Server based on protocol provided by device (if it is not a standard one like Modbus, otherwise you can use an off the shelf OPC Server if your device supports a standard protocol like Modbus). iFix should then be able to connect to this OPC Server and read data.
