Relation between PWL and SPL
Engineering topic

Posted by Kamarul on 28 February, 2008 - 11:10 pm
Appreciate if anyone could advise me on the relation between sound power level (PWL) and sound pressure level (SPL).

My application is gas blowdown to HP Flare header. There will be an RO to be installed downstream of the BDV. Based on process data, I have calculated that the PWL, i.e. noise inside the pipe, is about 168 dB. My main concern is SPL at 1 m from the pipe wall. How to convert the PWL at source to SPL at 1 m? If the SPL at 1 m is more than 90 dB, I will need to use low noise/multistage RO. If that is the case, I will also need to determine the correct pipe size to be used.

Thanking in advance.
