What is the Difference between Hard I/O and a Soft I/O?

I have a Siemens 417-2DP PLC on which 2 PROFIBUS networks are connected. Some ASI Valves and Berkert Valves are directly connected to one of the Profibus. And some ET200S are connected to the other Profibus.
