How to calculate the thickness of plates to fabricate a tank of MS plates size 3 meter X 3.5 meter X 5 meter (height) to be filled with water?

Dear,
Try to find your answer somewhere else. It is not a mechanical forum. It is Electrical, Automation and Instrumentation forum.
Check this, it may help you out...

By the way...
what are ms plates?
I'm not an engineer but currently working on a translation and I've come across this term in the context of solar thermal systems. An answer would be great
Thanks a lot

Mild Steel.

Carlotta,
MS shortcut for mild steel
SS shortcut for stainless steel
There must be a list of these somewhere

I believe MS refers to "mild steel".

MS plate, usually refer to mild steel. Though it can mean something else depending on which field of engineering.

After 2 years , plz find the answer.
Normally the tank thickness will be selected based on the inlet pressure.
but i assume this may be the atmospheric tank (atmospheric means the tank which is open to atmosphere).
For this kind of tank the minimum thickness will be 4 mm to 5 mm .
if i take 5 mm as thickness , the total weight of the tank will be:4.25 MT

it is very simple to calculate the thickness if the MS plate:Do the following Step
Calculate Mass of the water
Mass= density of water * volume of water
Mass is your load inside your tank
Calculate force F = mass * g
Pressure = F / A
A = surface area of the inside tank
A = Area of all sides
this pressure is also the stresses which will be develop due to weight of the water in side the tank.
Compare this with the allowable stress of the required plate thickness. which plate thickness allow those stresses that plate you can use.
thanks
