Root Locus Techniques using MATLAB

Hi,
Please help. I'm a 3rd year student with little control engineering experience but I have a project in Control, apparently very easy and I'm struggling.

I have gained a response from a servoset system and have a transfer function which I have then simulated in Matlab, so far so good. I have calculated a lead compensator mathematically but when implemented in Matlab it does not work at all in fact it degrades the system.

I also need to apply PID control but how do I calculate the values for Kp, Ki and Kd to implement them in Matlab if up until now my calculations are questionable.

Apologies if my questions insult this forum and thanks in advance if anyone would please point me in the right direction.
