I need to install a mass-flow meter for sweetened condensed milk, flow ~ 10'000 kg/hour. Problem is for such flow rate the suitable flowmeter pipe size is less than 1 inch, while the existing pipe size is 3 inch.
Two things confuse me:
1. I am afraid inserting 1" flowmeter in 3" pipeline using reducer will cause severe flow obstruction, overload the feed pump etc.
2. On other hand, installing 3" flowmeter is not good because capacity (range) is too big, ~ 180'000 kg/h, measurement accuracy will not be good.
What is the compromised solution for this ?

If you install 1" flowmeter not only the pressure drop would be significant but also the velocity of the fluid, then installing 3" would be oversize and will affect the precision of the measurement.
I work selecting configurating and installing special instrumentation for process, including coriolis so I propose you to write me and detail the process data concerning the nominal flow, temperature, pressure, density and viscosity. With this data I can select you the proper instrument size and I will tell you in return how will the fluid will react by calculating some parameters.

With this data I can select you the proper instrument size and I will tell you in return how will the fluid will react by calculating some parameters.

Talk with your coreolis flowmeter vendor, they should be able to tell you the pressure drop across the various size meters.

You may not have noticed this but in recent times coriolis meter manufacturers have started showing only maximum flowrates. This is because they have done a lot of work on the zeroing of the meters and you will now find they can offer extremely wide flow rate ranges.
For example E&H quote the turn down as 1000:1
So you will probably find that you can install a 3" meter in a 3" line, probably even a single tube version of the Promass and find that however low you actual flowrate (and 10,000 litres/hour isn't that low) fits comfortably with no loss of accuracy.
However, as suggested above these are the sorts of answer you will get by talking directly to a manufacturer.
