Hi ail,

Please look at this website to search for your step7 compatibility with your OS

http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/8250891

hope this helps!

Some of the newest versions of Step 7 will work with some versions of MS Windows Vista. Which of the many versions of Step 7 works with which of the many versions of MS Windows however is a very long and complicated subject.

If you go to the Siemens support and service web site and look for the information on Step 7 "service pack" updates it will give the details there. You will need to have all the details however of exactly what version and level of Step 7 you have, what Step 7 options you have, and which exact version of MS Windows Vista you have. Once you have that, you can look up whether what you have *should* work.

I said *should* work, because there are no guarantees that an update from Microsoft hasn't broken something else recently. I haven't tried this yet, so I am just going on the published information.

If you are using MS Windows 7 the situation should be pretty much the same as with MS Windows Vista, as their latest version of Windows (version 6.1) is just a minor update to Vista (version 6.0). However, again there are no guarantees there either.

With both Vista and Windows 7, the editions of the OS are important. Home Premium is not supported, Business (Vista) or Professional (Win7) or above are required along with the latest Step 7 v5.4 service pack.

Windows 7 is not yet supported by Siemens so don't try to ask them for help! Specialist mods to the .msi install files are required to recognise the new OS and install natively.

I got it working quickly by installing into the Windows Virtual PC (with provides an XP runtime) and then using Windows 7 XP Mode to bring the Step 7 window into Windows 7 as-if running natively.

Until Siemens brings out a service pack and supports Windows 7, I will not be relying on a Win7 machine for actual paid work.
