what is the best or proper way to wire an RS-485 modbus network? In a daisy chain from the prosoft device to the end device or in a star configuration?

I would recommend daisy chain if it is not difficult for you to do it (it depends on your installation and distance). also try to connect every node as a single point so if you disconnect a node you do not break the whole bus.

I agree with Gonzalo, remember to put termination resistors on the first and last node of the chain and use the gnd.
