Hi

We have a alarm list with all active alarms, acknowledged and unacknowledged alarms. When a alarm goes high, we trigger a siren with the function "ON Action" under "Alarm Categories".

Therefore every time a alarm goes high it triggers the siren. We want this function changed so that if a alarm already is on the alarm list, but unacknowledged, and the alarm goes low and high again, the siren must not be triggered because "the alarm already occurs on the alarm list". If the user then acknowledges the alarm on the alarm list and the alarm goes low and disappears from the alarm list, and then goes high and appears on the alarm list again, the siren must be triggered.

Why is the alarm still occurring? I understand that you don't want it to bother you, since it is "already on the list" but what are you doing to get it off the list? If it is okay to let an alarm continue to be on the active list, then why is it an alarm at all? Sounds to me like you could use a good alarm rationalization project.

In the days before DCS, when alarms became "free," only active critical alarms were reported to the control room. It cost about $3000 per point for analog annunciators, so people actually did the alarm rationalization before they implemented the control system.

Read Doug Rothenberg's book, _Alarm Management for Process Control_, and it will help you. It is available on Amazon, and from the publisher, Momentum Press.
