Oversize VFD

I want to reduce my spare parts inventor. I have a bunch of 3 HP drive and a couple of 2 and 1 HP drives and want to just keep 3 HP drives on the shelf. Is there any real disadvantage to oversize my VFD by a couple HP?

I don't think there is a problem in your case. Big drives may have problems with small motors. I guest it could be related with current sensors or something like that.

Just make sure frames are not much different or maintenance guys will have some extra time to fit them in the panel, adding extra time to production breakdown.

In some high performance applications, drives don't like to feed motors with FLA below 30% of the drive rating (or so they taught me in drives class), but you're over that, plus if you're just doing normal fan-and-pump stuff, you'll be fine.

I agree with the other posts....Just bear in mind that sometimes the range of some of the parameters in the drive can be restricted. Be sure that your range of applications fits into those range limitations.
