SLC 5/04 talking to remote RS232

I am needing to get a 5/04 to talk to a remote hmi via the RS232 port on the processor. I have installed GE MDS iNet radios at each end. I can ping between them but get no packet read/writes on the SLC end. The HMI end is setup as the AP and the SLC as a remote. I have studied the DF1-EIP document for this radio and haven't gotten any closer. The routing appears to be correct. The PING works, the serial doesn't.
