Reliability of Magnetic Level Switches (Reed)
Continuous process industries, DCS questions. topic

Dear Industry Experts,

We are upgrading the instruments on a vessel with a level gauge and a float level switch. We are installing a magnetic level gauge and I am planning to use "magnetic level switches" (external to the magnetic level gauge). Since the existing float type level switch is of critical function (ESD) I am somehow concerned about the reliability of the external magnetic switches. I am not sure about the reliability of the reed switch inside and I am concerned about potential spurious trips as well as failure to sense the level.

Based on your experience, could you please advise if they are reliable? Are they available with any sort of SIL rating?

I know tuning fork & RF switches are alternative options but we are inclined to make some cost saving.

Thanks,
OZI
