Bi-Directional Flow measurement in steam transmission line

Hi

I was wondering if you could guide me in selecting a bidirectional steam flow meter in bidirectional steam transmission line. In our project two plant have been linked via 16" pipe and steam will be transmitted between these two plants in the event of boiler shutdown in each of units, so steam must be measured in each direction.
The operating pressure is 45 barg and temperature is 400 deg C.

This can be done using either an Insertion Turbine Flow meter (InFLOW, VorTek, and others) or a special orifice plate arrangement with dual transmitters and a little electronics.

Ultrasonic flow meters can also measure bi-directional flow. There are high-temperature versions available for liquids up to 500 deg C (e.g. HTF in CSPs), probably there are alternatives for steam, too.

Best regards

what sort of steam velocities are covered by the turbine meter?

Depending on the brand and the exact application data; average pipe velocities on steam can be as low as 4 ft/sec to a maximum of about 175 Ft/sec over different blade angles. A given blade angle will give about a 10:1 or more flow turn down.
