Siemens S5-130W

I have a very intermittent fault on a machine that is controlled by a Siemens S5 130W. I want to connect a laptop to the PLC to monitor the inputs, outputs and flags. There is a spare slot in the rack for a 511-5 module but I do not know which 511 module to buy as there are different ones! Also the 511's seem to be for PG units which don't exist any more and I don't know if it is possible to use a laptop instead.

Does anyone know if what I want to do is possible, what interface module and cable I need and which software to recommend please?

Thanks in anticipation.

Siemens has some windows software available for the S5. It seems to work OK. best bet is to just call your local Siemens distributor and ask.

The S5 has a PG port on it that you can use. You will likely need a comm adapter of some sort.

Again, best bet is to call your local Siemens distributor.

I am told that Fast Trak software has an S5 programming package as well.

Hi Bob

Thanks for your help. We have had Siemens in to look at the problem. but because the fault is not on their side, they just say there is not a problem. The engineer would not let me have details of the gear he was using so that's why I was asking on the forum. I know that I have to plug a 511 module into the 130W in order to get the port but there are different modules!

I would reiterate what I said before. Call your local Siemens distributor. They can tell you what is available. The S5 is not well supported anymore.

There should be a port on the CPU itself that you could use if you have the correct adapter and software.
