PID Control In an Elevator

Hello,

Just a simple question, I was wondering how a PID or PI could be used in an application involving elevators with a pulley? I can imagine it can be used to control a motor speed, but I can't visualize it working that way. Is it practical to use PID Control in an elevator?

Could someone help me?
