How does generator control modes (Voltage, PF and Var) works and affects generator operations. our site machine is GE Frame 6Fa+e a 70MW machine a dual fuel type and it is being operated only on speed-droop mode (pre-select mode) and on voltage control selection. my question is when to select Power factor or Var control? what is effects on system operations?

Thanks and Regards,

Jotang84,

If VAr control mode is selected and a VAr setpoint is entered the Speedtronic will maintain the VAr setpoint while the unit is running, and if the load setpoint changes.

If Power Factor control mode is selected and a power factor setpoint is entered the Speedtronic will maintain the power factor setpoint while the unit is running, and if the load setpoint changes as long as power factor control is enabled.

Just as with Pre-Selected Load Control if the operator clicks on RAISE- or LOWER VOLTAGE while either VAr or Power Factor Control is active the active mode will be canceled and the generator control will revert back to Voltage Control. (I'm referring to the operator clicking on RAISE- or LOWER SPEED/LOAD while Pre-Selected Load Control is enabled cancelling Pre-Selected Load Control.) If the operator wants to change the VAr or Power Factor setpoint theyn the setpoint needs to be changed, just like with changing load by changing the Pre-Selected Load Control setpoint.

Hope this helps!
