Coal Bunker Level Detection

I am in need of help in designing a automation system for a tripper car.

The first problem is detecting the level of the coal in the bunker, the dimensions of the bunker is 500 meters by 30 meters and up to 50m deep, there are two tripper cars that operate on this particular bunker, and at the current moment they are operated by workers.

Does anyone know of any excising solution's to this problem, specifically the level sensing, I want to make it as cost effective as possible, as many designs have been rejected due to their high costs.

There are several solutions, but none of them are inexpensive, and you may have already considered and rejected them because of cost.

I will confine myself to suggesting only one: Emerson Rosemount has purchased an Israeli company that produced a three-dimensional scanner that does solids level extremely well. It works. It is not cheap.
